The Human Remains Recovery program is a continuing education course designed for law enforcement agents, death investigators, medical examiners, and others in the medico-legal community. The course is primarily focused on outdoor body recovery, including skeletal or fleshed, buried or surface remains.

Course Details

• The course is held at the Forensic Investigation Research Station in Whitewater, Colorado.
• The course duration is from Monday to Friday.
• The cost of the course is $795, which includes snacks, beverages, lunches, a copy of course materials, a t-shirt, and a FIRS patch.
• Continuing education credit for the IAI crime scene certification and recertification is available.
• Continuing education for ABMDI was approved for 37.75 hours.

Course Content

• The course includes grave location techniques and hands-on body recovery of both skeletal and buried remains.
• Lecture topics include basic methods for locating buried remains, basic human osteology, and the impact of scavenging on search strategies.
• Participants will gain practical knowledge and experience identifying and recovering surface and buried human remains.

Eligibility

• Students must have consent from FIRS to enroll in the course.
• The course is capped at 16 participants to limit the size of excavation groups.
